I enjoy painting people because I find it to be immediate and visceral. Capturing likenesses is more than a process of visual facsimile; each gaze holds an infinite number of meanings for the subject, the painter, and the viewer. I’m especially drawn to painting people I know and am chiefly interested in the connections to be found in this process. Inherent in these connections are the potentials for disconnect, and it is here that my compositions usually find their form. Why is it so difficult to connect to ourselves and the other people we know? It is this question that I’m exploring in my figurative work.

Landscapes provide another dimension for exploration: that of the immediacy of the natural world; its light, atmosphere, and sense of space. I'm most interested in communicating those aspects of our environments which are undefinable: the overall feeling of being present. And it is in this aspect that my figurative and landscape works align; the insatiable search for evidence that life exists, here and now, whether it be in the recognition of another's presence or in the awareness of a moment's coalescence.
